Irene Margiolaki is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology of the University of Patras (UPAT, Patras, Greece). She graduated in Physics in 1999 (University of Crete, Heraklion, Greece). Her D.Phil. thesis on “Structural, Magnetic and Dynamic properties of fullerene- based materials” was completed in 2004 at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences, of the University of Sussex, UK (official date of graduation: 20 February 2004). During the period, 2003-2010, she has been employed, initially as a post doctorate fellow and later as an instrument scientist, by the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), in Grenoble, France.

An important part of her research at ESRF (2003-2010) and future research activities is the development of innovative powder diffraction methods for the structural characterisation of biological macromolecules, when data-quality single crystals for X-ray crystallography cannot be obtained. In order to efficiently explore this area, apart from her colleagues at ESRF (Prof. Andrew N. Fitch & Dr. Jonathan P. Wright) and APS (Prof. R. B. Von Dreele), she is working in collaboration with various international research teams including large scale facilities (synchrotron and nuclear sources), research institutes (Prof. B. Canard, B. Coutard & N. Papageorgiou, AFMB, Marseille, France), pharmaceutical companies (Novo Nordisk, Denmark) and other industrial units (PANalytical, Bruker, NanoMEGAS etc.). Since 2010, she leads her 15 membered research team. In 2013 she inaugurated an X-ray crystallography laboratory at the department of biology equipped with 2 modern diffractometers for single crystal and powder diffraction measurements. In 2015, she created a station for protein expression, purification and crystallization at the same department.

Nick Stergioulas is a Professor of Astrophysics and General Relativity at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He is known for his contributions to the study of compact objects like black-holes and neutrino stars. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, under the supervision of John L. Friedman, in 1996. He was a post-doctoral researcher at the Albert-Einstein-Institute, Potsdam (MPA for Gravitational Physics, 1998-1999) before joining the Department of Physics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as a faculty member.
His research topics include: Compact stars as sources of gravitational waves; Equilibrium and instabilities of rotating relativistic stars; Nonlinear oscillations of relativistic stars; MHD oscillations in relativistic models of magnetized neutron stars; Numerical relativity; Interaction of gravitational waves with plasma; and Relativistic accretion disks.
Nick Stergioulas served or currently serves as an elected member in the governing councils of the Hellenic Astronomical Society (2008-2010) and the Hellenic Society for Relativity, Gravitation and Cosmology (2012-2014). Recently, he was elected for a second term on the governing council of the Virgo-Ego Scientific Forum (VESF), which supports the VIRGO gravitational-wave detector.Moreover, he represents Greece in the management committee of the ESF COST project “Exploring Fundamental Physics with Compact Stars” and is participating in the CTA Consortium and in the LOFT proposal for a new ESA X-ray mission.
He is author of a highly-cited review article in Living Reviews in Relativity and co-author of a new book, entitled “Rotating Relativistic Stars”, in the highly-acclaimed series Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics. He is currently an associate editor for the journal “General Relativity and Gravitation” (Springer).

Nick is a Knowledge Transfer Officer at CERN since September 2012. He previously worked within the IT Service Management team, involved notably in Problem and Event management. While leading the User Support section of IT, Nick was responsible for the site-wide computing desktop support, the CERN IT Helpdesk and IT problem management. Additionally, his responsibilities included the definition and negotiation of service level agreements with services across the organization and the definition of the strategy for the implementation of a CERN-wide printing policy for which he oversaw the Operations management.
Prior to User Support, Nick was a systems analyst and developer within the IT Advanced Information Systems group. Before coming to CERN, Nick worked for the Sandoz Institute for Medical research in London on a software analysis package. Nick holds a BSc Honours degree in Physics from Imperial College of Science and Technology and an MSc in Computer Science from University College, London.

A senior lecturer at the University of Bern, where he is teaching physics classes for undergraduates and master students. He brought the IPPOG Masterclasses to Bern and became the Swiss representative to IPPOG in 2009 and is elected IPPOG co-chair since 2013.Attracted by high energetic particle collisions, cutting edge science, and a life inside international collaborations, he joined the Laboratory for High Energy Physics at the University of Bern in 1997 and also joined the ATLAS collaboration at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC), long before first collisions took place. Hans Peter became pivotal in the design and implementation of the trigger and data acquisition system of the ATLAS detector, and is now concentrating on physics studies of proton-proton collisions provided by the LHC and measured with the ATLAS detector. His main interests are in a precise understanding of the Standard Model at the new energy domain the LHC offers, as this forms the basis needed when searching for new physics signatures beyond the Standard Model. Often new physics can only be revealed in an excess of events which lies on top over a large sea of events that are fully compatible with the Standard Model and otherwise have identical signatures. Hans Peter is convinced that only in a combination of precision measurements with searches for new physics will lead to new discoveries such as the origin of mass, extra dimensions, or supersymmetry.

Ο Νικόλαος Μαυρόματος γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1961. Αποφοίτησε με άριστα από το Φυσικό Τμήμα του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών το 1983. Την περίοδο 1983-1987 ολοκλήρωσε την διδακτορική του διατριβή (PhD) στη Θεωρητική Φυσική στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία με την καθοδήγηση του καθηγητή Sir Chris Llewellyn-Smith. Την περίοδο 1987-1990 εργάστηκε σαν νέος ερευνητής (Junior Research Fellow) στο Hertford College του Πανεπιστημίου της Οξφόρδης στο Τμήμα Θεωρητικής Φυσικής. Την περίοδο 1990-1992 μετακινήθηκε στο Ευρωπαϊκό Κέντρο Πυρηνικών Ερευνών (C.E.R.N.) στο Τμήμα Θεωρητικής Φυσικής (Theory Division) όπου εργάστηκε σαν ερευνητής (Research Fellow). Την περίοδο 1993-1995 χρηματοδοτούμενος από την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση εργάστηκε στο Κέντρο Ερευνών του Αννεσύ (Annecy Laboratory) στη Γαλλία.

Το 1995 επέστρεψε στη Αγγλία όπου την περίοδο 1995 – 1999 ήταν ερευνητής ανώτερης βαθμίδας (Advanced Research Fellow) στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης χρηματοδοτούμενος από το Συμβούλιο Έρευνας για τη Σωματιδιακή Φυσική και Αστρονομία της Μ. Βρετανίας (Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council-PPARC). Το 1999 εξελέγη Λέκτορας Φυσικής στο King’s College στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Λονδίνου (University of London ) θέση στη οποία παρέμεινε μέχρι το 2003 οπότε μετακινήθηκε σαν επισκέπτης καθηγητής στο Φυσικό Τμήμα του Πανεπιστημίου της Βαλέντσια (Physics Department of the University of Valencia). University of Tubingen. General Relativity and Theoretical Cosmology

Marco Tucci studied Physics at the University of Milan, where he also obtained the PhD in Astronomy. After that, he had the opportunity to travel around Europe as postdoctoral researcher: he worked before in Spain, then London and Paris. He is currently “maitre assistant” at the University of Geneva. His research activity is focused on cosmology and cosmic microwave background. He has been collaborating with different international projects, and in the last years he has been actively involved in the ESA Planck mission.

I obtained my PhD in theoretical physics from Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and subsequently worked for three years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for physics in Munich before joining the Theory Unit at CERN in September 2014. My research focuses on understanding physics at high energies, including regimes where quantum gravity effects become important. In particular, my work aspires to obtain a deeper understanding of string theory, its relations to gauge theory and its implications for cosmology and phenomenology. A very challenging problem that my current work aims to address is to obtain a better handle on mechanisms for breaking supersymmetry in string theory and their consequences for Beyond the Standard Model phenomenology.
